In Opposition To The "Top Down" Federal Land Designations
We the undersigned oppose any and all legislative efforts to push "mega" land designation legislation, including the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (H.R. 980), which would designate 24 million acres of mostly Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service lands in five states as federal wilderness areas.
We believe that this bill will damage public access and recreation in many states across the West, stymie efforts to meet our nation’s energy needs (including renewable energy expansion) and wreak havoc with already struggling local economies.
Wilderness designations have historically been carefully developed, on a state-by-state basis, with substantial input provided by the individuals, communities, local governments, states and local federal land managers. That "bottom-up" approach allows localized concerns can be identified and resolved and results in wilderness designations everyone can support.
Federal land designations -- and particularly wilderness designations -- have very real and often damaging consequences to localities and communities.
