Judge Rules for Utah County in Fight Over Roads Crossing Federal Tracts

A federal district judge in Utah ruled last week that a dozen dirt roads -- including four running through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument -- may remain open to the public in a decision hailed by the state as a major victory.  The 121-page ruling by U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups was in response to a 2008 lawsuit by Kane County in southern Utah that sought to keep open to the public 15 roads crisscrossing 89 miles of federal land in Utah.   Read More ...

Study: Oil Industry Economic Impact Pegged at $30B

The economic impact of North Dakota’s oil industry has increased nearly sevenfold between 2005 and 2011, from $4.4 billion to $30.4 billion, according to a study from North Dakota State University.  The study, sponsored by the North Dakota Petroleum Council, estimates each barrel of oil produced in North Dakota generates about $150 in economic activity.   Read More ...

Secretary Salazar Approves Three Renewable Energy Projects in California and Nevada

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar this week announced the approval of three major renewable energy projects that, when built, are expected to deliver 1,100 megawatts to the Western grid.  Since 2009, including this week's announcement,  DOI has approved 37 renewable energy projects (20 utility-scale solar facilities, 8 wind farms and 9 geothermal plants), with associated transmission corridors and infrastructure to connect to established power grids.  The Bureau of Land Management has identified an additional 23 active renewable energy proposals slated for review this year.    Read More ...

Congressional Report: Oil and Gas Development Up, But Not on Federal Lands

A new report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) says that U.S. oil production is increasing, but that increases are a result of more development on privately held land. EIA Reports Strong US Renewables and Gas Power Performance

Renewable power generation sources performed strongly last year, while coal, oil and nuclear power declined. According to the latest issue of the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) "Electric Power Monthly," with preliminary data through to December 31, 2012, non-hydro renewable sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, solar, wind) increased by 12.8 per cent last year compared to 2011 and provided 5.4 per cent of net U.S. electrical generation.   Read More ...

EPA Inspector General Releases Report Pushing EPA to Improve Oil & Gas Emissions Data Collection

This week, the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Inspector General (OIG) has initiated  review of the agency's collection of data relating to oil and gas emissions.  Specifically, the review is intended to determine whether EPA has the data needed to make key decisions regarding air emissions from oil and natural gas production.  The OIG undertook this evaluation, in part, to address "EPA's Goal or Cross-Cutting Strategy to 'Take Action on Climate Change and Improving Air Quality.'"
